2/13/09 Mike Miller (Dist. 1) requests an independent audit.
- Chairman Jimmy Bartlett (Dist. 2) refuses.
6/5/09 Board receives proposed school attorney contract from Ken Bernard.
6/11/09 After citing major concerns over amount of payment ($295,275), contract terms and whether budget was sufficient to cover all legal costs, Mr. Miller and Mr. Barnes request a review and advise postponing the vote.
- Chairman Jimmy Bartlett (Dist. 2) again refuses.
6/11/09 Deadline for citizens to register to comment on School Board’s agenda.
- School Board releases agenda a day too late for citizens to register to speak about items on the agenda!
6/15/09 Citizens not permitted to speak. Kay Turner, CFO states in board meeting that projects are under budget, budgets are in line and they think they are prepared for 2010. Mr. Miller and Mr. Barnes voice sound arguments in favor of postponing vote and using prudent judgement.
- Jimmy Bartlett, Sam Haskell and Jeff Morris approve contract anyway.
7/1/09 School Board Plans to increase taxes (millage rate) to cover costs.
7/4/09 2000 Leaflets in the hands of concerned parents, teachers and tax payers. Not one was left on the ground!
7/7/09 Special called school board mttg. Superintendent Remillard recommends raising all millage rates in spite of having $38 million surplus. Unanimous vote not to raise M&O millage rate. Raised Bond millage rate on advice of CFO & school attorney.
- Miller, Barnes and Morris seek answers and take the lead in questioning tax increase.
- Jimmy Bartlett & Sam Haskell recommend increasing your taxes, then back down under pressure.
7/7/09 Douglas County Sentinel reports 6 of 7 Middle and 4 of 5 High Schools FAIL to meet AYP.
